This steel bollard that ENCAT manufactures has a unique collapsible design and is an industry first. This type of bollard may be used in storm water culverts or storm water conveyance channels that have debris control structures in place. In order to prevent debris from reducing the flow of water, they can be situated near the entrance to suit the width and height of the existing site conditions.
Adding our bollard to an existing debris control structure can improve it’s effectiveness. During times when debris impact loads or water pressure loads exceed the shear pin strength of the bollard, the bollard will lay flat, preventing irreparable damage to the bollard. You can replace the shear pin once it is safe to do so and then the bollard can be stood upright to be ready for the next storm water event. This saves councils resources, time and money on maintenance or replacement costs.
We designed this type of bollard because flooding that is caused by blocked gully pits is reasonably common, but when pipes or culverts block, this is completely different. Debris blockage at inlets to pipes, culverts or even within channels can massively reduce their conveyance capacity, sending water flows to other locations like nearby houses. Once the minor drainage systems are not effective in an area, the water will build up and find a new way to continue on its natural path towards the sea.
In some cases, the larger systems that are in place to manage these overland flow routes may get blocked and create local flooding incidents. The common reasons for this include;
- weak and dead trees
- illegal dumping of rubbish, cars, building materials
- large levels of organic growth within creeks and channels
- sediment build up to the top of bank level
The potential debris that is present can be washed down the line during larger velocity flood events. This can block inlet structures like culverts, the bollard can help to prevent this from occurring & enable the water to flow as required.
