ENCAT: Type 1 Pedestrian Fencing used outside a school crossing in NSW

Here is an example of Type 1 RMS Pedestrian Fencing outside a local school crossing on a main road that also had a cycleway

"This was a really interesting project to be involved with. We supplied our Type 1 RMS compliant pedestrian fencing to help Amity College and the local council to control the flow of students on this busy road."

"What made this a little more complex was they needed to consider the main road in both directions, driveway exit, road crossing, cycle path and even cycle lanes."

"This is a great example of pedestrian fencing being used to help manage complex pedestrian flow situations in local areas around schools or crossings"

ENCAT were once again chosen to supply Type 1 Pedestrian Fencing to a local civil works company that won the contract to install new safety fencing for along Kurrajong Road. We manufactured and supplied new steel Type 1 Pedestrian Fencing to current RMS specifications so that it could be used on this long stretch of straight road that ran past the school and its crossing. The area chosen for this installation was along the median strip that separated the residential housing and bushland from the Amity College on the opposite side of the road.

Even though the width of this road was restricted to two lanes either way it was very easy for students to walk across the road at any point to get to the bus stop or walk over to the houses nearby. So the primary goal was to keep the students from Amity College safe

During peak school opening and closing times this created a wide array of safety problems with vehicles trying to pick up students, people trying to cross the road & heavy vehicles using Kurrajong Road to get to the local industrial area. If that wasn’t enough to contend with, there was also a dedicated cycleway that connected the path that ran along the M7 that had to be considered.

We produced the Type 1 Pedestrian Fencing (that was needed to be installed on the median strip and verges) from our factory in NSW. One of the unique elements for this project was the reduced height of the fencing that was used closest to the crossing which can maximise potential visibility for people crossing the road or vehicles approaching.

This is an example of the service we can provide with our  RMS Pedestrian Fencing that we manufacture and supply in Australia to civil works contractors. We have the capabilities to custom design pedestrian fencing elements to suit different sites or locations to fulfill the application.

RMS Pedestrian Fencing style choices for schools

RMS Pedestrian Fencing Style Choices for School Crossings in NSW

The most popular choice of Pedestrian Fencing that is used for most applications is the Type 1 style (as illustrated above) there are five other choices of fencing style that can be used as well as a choice of selected embellishments.

Each design has to comply with the strict regulations and design drawings provided by the road authorities to ensure they can be safe for use on public roads. There are instances where civil contractors or procurement teams may use fencing manufacturers who don’t make fencing that is actually compliant. See some examples of non-compliant fencing below

Why was pedestrian fencing needed at this location?

Pedestrian fencing was required on this main road because of the very complex roadway area around the school. Within a short distance you had a main road, pedestrian crossing, residential housing, driveway, industrial area, bicycle path and nearby overpass.

There were so many areas that either people needed to walk or vehicles needed to access either for the school, local businesses or residents. Into that mix were two bus stops either side of the road that were used mainly by students during the week.

It is the perfect example of why pedestrian fencing should be used near all school locations and crossings. It can force the students to use the pedestrian crossing (or traffic lights) to be able to get over the road safely instead of risking their lives trying to weave between motorists.

What made this installation unique?

Thankfully there was enough budget allocated to this project to ensure permanent pedestrian fencing was installed on selected verges as well as a long stretch of the median. This enabled the use of low height fencing panels that were in close proximity to the pedestrian crossing area. This creates improved visibility for people crossing or motorists in sedans or sports cars approaching the area.
