I really enjoyed this project because it challenged our design team to come up with a solution that combined different requirements for a pedestrian fence that could be used as a balustrade.

Our team is able to come up with these custom designs to solve so many different civil construction challenges. As a father, I also love helping schools to keep students safe.

ENCAT is an Australian manufacturer of pedestrian fencing that can supply local schools and university sites. For more than twenty years we have provided pedestrian fencing of all types to local or regional councils, shopping centres and fencing contractors from our stock held in Australia.

We have a manufacturing facility located in Wollongong that can supply products to any state in Australia. Our team does all the design and manufacturing in-house to your requirements and application.

Why did this school need pedestrian fencing installed?

Kincoppal Catholic School in Sydney had just built a new access road into their property. The site was on a sloping block of land which had two levels of retaining walls and quite a large drop off. This presented a significant danger to pedestrians and also vehicles.

The school engaged ENCAT because we are a civil manufacturing company that no only specilises in manufacturing pedestrian fencing, but when required, we can also provide custom designed solutions or products for public use spaces.

Originally designed by the Roads and Maritime Services, pedestrian fencing is designed to prevent pedestrians walking onto or crossing a road at a mid point. It can change the walking patterns of pedestrians along roads or busy footpaths. In this case it would deter them from venturing towards the drop off while also helping to retain any vehicles that may leave the road.

After a site assessment was completed it was decided that a BCA compliant pedestrian fencing installation would be required that featured no gaps so that it could be certified as a balustrade.

What is BCA compliant pedestrian fencing?

Our BCA Compliant pedestrian fencing has all the features of our RMS pedestrian fencing products, with the added bonus of being able to be used as a certified balustrade.

This becomes particularly important for applications that require BCA compliance and certification. For this project in the school the this product is ideal to be used on retaining walls adjacent to traffic.

Standard pedestrian fencing has gaps greater than 125mm,
therefore it is not BCA compliant.

The Building Code of Australia regulations state that a balustrade must

  • Be at least 1m high
  • Have no openings greater than 125mm
  • Withstand loads as per AS1170.1
  • No climbing elements between 150 and 760mm

The ENCAT team was able to produce the required panels and help with the installation on the driveway at the school.

High quality pedestrian fencing that copes with Australian weather conditions.

One of the unique aspects of ENCAT’s local manufacturing is that we only use Australian made steel. In fact, our whole process uses only the best local suppliers to ensure any product we produce can stand up to Australia’s harsh weather conditions.
