ENCAT: Type 1 Pedestrian Fence with a custom made gate

ENCAT RMS Type 1 Pedestrian Fence with a gate installed at Scarborough in NSW on Lawrence Hargrave Drive near the public school with metal bus shelter
We designed a Type 1 Pedestrian Fence installation that included a custom made gate to give access to the fenced area behind the bus shelter.

"We love coming up with design solutions to solve everyday problems that schools, councils or civil works contractors face."

"We were able to create a custom made gate to suit this pedestrian fencing installation to maintain access to the school grounds behind the bus shelter.

This helped improve road safety levels & practical access to the schools property without needed to redevelop the area"

ENCAT was contracted to help with the design of a Type 1 Pedestrian Fencing solution that was needed for a bus stop area in Scarborough on the NSW South Coast. What made this project unique was the need to ensure the fencing could maintain access to the fenced-off school grounds behind the bus stop. Using our design expertise we manufactured a custom-made metal gate to form part of the pedestrian fencing panel installation.

What type of site did the Type 1 Pedestrian Fencing need to be installed on?

ENCAT had already provided one of our outdoor metal bus shelters for this roadside location in Scarborough on Lawrence Hargrave Drive on the South Coast of NSW. This stretch of road carries traffic between Stanwell Tops and the northern coastal suburbs of the Wollongong area. The turn out area provided lots of space for buses to pick up or drop off students for the local public school.

The school and local council wanted to improve pedestrian safety with the installation of new Pedestrian Fencing that would compliment the existing guardrails installed on either side of the turn out area on the main road. Doing this would maximise the protection given to anyone standing near the bus shelter area which can get very busy during school periods.

Behind the bus shelter was a fenced area that was part of the school grounds, so we had to assess the site first to understand how our pedestrian fencing could be installed and maintain access to the school grounds. What we developed was a custom made metal gate system that would form part of the Pedestrian Fencing panel system to maintain access to the school grounds area & protect students waiting at the bus stop.

What was the design solution we came up with to suit the Pedestrian Fencing?

Encat Pedestrian Fence with Dual Panel Gate Custom Made in Australia for roads
Using our in-house civil design capabilities we custom made a metal gate solution that would compliment the Type 1 RMS specification Pedestrian Fencing that was chosen to be installed at this site. Using similar design and construction techniques used for our Pedestrian Fencing manufacturing it meant the gate we designed would;

  • Look like it was designed specifically to suit the whole installation.

  • Be made of similar materials to the rest of the fencing to be durable and hard wearing.

  • Incorporate solid metal locking mechanisms to reduce the chances of it opening on a vehicle or person.

  • Powder coating in the same style and colour as the rest of the fencing.

  • Very simple to use mechanisms to make it easy for small, medium or large hands to operate.

Why is a custom made fence better than pre-fab options?

The benefits of selecting custom made solutions is they can be better integrated and unified into a site or project. In this example we didn’t source a gate or a locking mechanism to try and ‘fit’ it between our Pedestrian Fencing panels.

Instead, everything was designed and made in-house with our own manufacturing. This means all the elements work together better & have been designed for the specific application rather than being adapted.

When receiving quotes from other contractors this could be a way that costs are reduced, but ultimately it will lead to shorter lifespans on installations, greater maintenance & a poorer finished product.

What design elements made this Pedestrian Fencing installation unique?

Solid metal construction & welding

Every element of the additional metal gate design used the same principles we apply to our pedestrian fencing.

Tough hardware

ENCAT is a metal manufacturing specialist so we are able to design tough hardware elements that are incorporated into each design vs ‘adding on’ items bought externally.

Tough, durable construction

Using our in-house manufacturing processes we can control quality from end to end, from the materials we use all the way to the welding.

Designs suitable to an application

We successfully designed a solution to meet the required brief. This saved money on new landscaping or other works required on the site.

Products designed to work together

ENCAT is able to look at a project and work out solutions that make sense while incorporating all the requirements. In this example the solution ticked all the boxes & didn’t require additional changes to the site.

Custom designed

Our civil engineering team does all the design work in-house to ensure that everything we manufacture perfectly suits your application.

What did the finished fencing and gate look like?

The completed Pedestrian Fencing installation with the custom made gate looks seamless from any angle. Each post, panel & piece of hardware looks and feels like it was designed for a single purpose in mind. While the colour chosen was black, this could have been done in green to match the school’s fencing to blend into the environment better or could have been left in a steel-finish to match the roadside barriers.

Custom made Pedestrian Fencing installations

ENCAT regularly works with civil works contractors, local or state government departments to design, manufacture and install Pedestrian Fencing to suit unusual applications. We have been doing this since 1989

Founder & Director of ENCAT Australia

You know, back in 1989, a new metal fabricator in NSW emerged – ENCAT. We craft a range of products that are focussed on safety. Specialising in Pedestrian Fencing, ENCAT ensures our roads aren’t just strips of tarmac, but lifelines where every step you take and every drive you make is cushioned with care.

When you think roads, think safety. When you think safety, think ENCAT. Your life’s worth it.
